The Canon of
Reconstructography

Preamble

Why the Canon Exists

Every discipline needs a governing document — a set of principles that define what it is, what it stands for, and how it must conduct itself. The Canon of Reconstructography is that document.

It exists because human understanding is fragile. Memory fades. Stories conflict. History is rewritten by those with power. Evidence is suppressed, distorted, or simply lost. The Canon exists to resist all of that — to establish, in writing, the principles that govern how we reconstruct human understanding from evidence.

These are not suggestions. They are laws.

Mission

What Reconstructography Is For

Reconstructography exists to restore what time, conflict, and silence have taken from human understanding. It is a discipline dedicated to rebuilding accurate, evidence-based knowledge of human lives, events, and character — not to judge, but to understand.

The mission is pursued through research, publication, education, software, and the ongoing refinement of this Canon. Every application of Reconstructography — from family history to legal investigation to historical research — is governed by the same principles.

Vision

The World We Are Building Toward

A world in which every human life — regardless of origin, status, or era — can be understood honestly. In which evidence is preserved rather than destroyed. In which stories are built from truth rather than imposed upon it. In which the wisdom of the past is available to inform the decisions of the future.

This is not a utopian fantasy. It is a practical commitment. Every reconstruction completed, every archive preserved, every practitioner trained brings this vision one step closer.

The Foundational Promise

What We Commit To

We promise to preserve evidence before interpreting it. To present contradictions rather than hide them. To assign confidence levels honestly. To trace every claim to its source. To treat every subject with dignity. To revise our conclusions when new evidence demands it. And to ensure that AI assists but humans decide.

This promise is not made to an audience. It is made to the evidence itself — and to the human beings whose lives that evidence represents.

Ethical Commitments

The Ethics of Reconstruction

Reconstructography is a powerful methodology. Like all powerful methodologies, it can be misused. The Canon's ethical commitments exist to prevent that misuse.

No reconstruction shall be used to harm, humiliate, or exploit the subject or their family. No evidence shall be selectively presented to support a predetermined conclusion. No confidence level shall be inflated beyond what the evidence supports. No reconstruction shall be published without transparency about its methodology, its sources, and its limitations.

The Meaning of Evidence

What Evidence Is

Evidence is any artifact, record, communication, testimony, or observable pattern that can be traced to a specific source and evaluated for reliability. Evidence includes photographs, documents, emails, messages, videos, audio recordings, physical objects, official records, witness accounts, and oral history.

Evidence must be preserved before it is interpreted. It must never be altered, selectively omitted, or ranked by convenience. Contradictory evidence is not a problem to be solved — it is information to be honored.

The Meaning of Truth

What Truth Is

Truth in Reconstructography is not a fixed destination — it is the most accurate picture the available evidence can produce, held with appropriate confidence and subject to revision when new evidence emerges.

Truth is not the same as certainty. A reconstruction may be highly confident or tentative. Both are valid. What is never valid is presenting inference as fact, or suppressing evidence that complicates a preferred conclusion. Truth requires honesty about what is known and humility about what is not.

The Meaning of Story

What Story Is

Story is the human form of truth. It is how understanding is transmitted, remembered, and applied. Reconstructography produces stories — but only stories that emerge from evidence, not stories that are imposed upon it.

The story serves the evidence. The evidence does not serve the story. When narrative and evidence conflict, the narrative must yield. A story that contradicts its evidence is not a story — it is fiction. Fiction has its place. It is not here.

The Meaning of Wisdom

What Wisdom Is

Wisdom is the purpose of reconstruction. A reconstruction is complete not when all evidence has been gathered, but when it produces understanding that can inform a wiser future.

Wisdom requires honesty about what is known, humility about what is not, and courage to share truth even when it is uncomfortable. Wisdom is not the same as knowledge. Knowledge is what the evidence shows. Wisdom is what we do with it.

Human Dignity

The Non-Negotiable

Every human life reconstructed is treated with dignity. This is not a sentiment — it is a structural requirement of the methodology. Truth-telling does not require cruelty. Honesty and compassion are not opposites.

The subject's humanity is always the center of the work. A reconstruction that diminishes the humanity of its subject has failed — regardless of how accurate its evidence is.

Intellectual Humility

What We Do Not Know

Reconstructography is a young discipline. Its methods will be refined. Its applications will expand. Its ethical commitments will deepen. The Canon acknowledges its own incompleteness.

Intellectual humility is not weakness — it is the foundation of honest inquiry. We hold our conclusions with the confidence the evidence warrants — no more, no less. We revise when revision is required. We acknowledge gaps when gaps exist.

Transparency

Show Your Work

Every reconstruction must be transparent about its methodology, its sources, its confidence levels, and its limitations. Transparency is not optional — it is what distinguishes Reconstructography from storytelling.

A practitioner who cannot show their work has not done the work. A publication that does not disclose its evidence is not a publication — it is an assertion. Transparency is the mechanism by which the Canon's other commitments are enforced.

Revision as Strength

The Courage to Change

When new evidence emerges, the reconstruction is updated. When a conclusion is shown to be wrong, it is corrected. When a methodology is shown to be flawed, it is revised. The history of all revisions is preserved with full provenance.

A discipline that cannot revise itself is not a discipline — it is a belief system. Revision is not a sign of failure. It is the highest expression of intellectual integrity.

AI Assists. Humans Decide.

The Boundary That Cannot Move

Artificial intelligence may assist in organizing, searching, and surfacing evidence. It may identify patterns, flag contradictions, and suggest connections. But all interpretive conclusions are made by human beings who bear full responsibility for them.

This principle is non-negotiable. It is not a temporary position pending the development of better AI. It is a permanent commitment rooted in the understanding that interpretation is a human act — and that responsibility cannot be delegated to an algorithm.
